I don't know about where you live..but down here no gas would make it tough..but we'd survive. We know how to grow our food, we know how to hunt and fish, we know how to make do with less, we know how to heat our homes....maybe that is why you don't understand the logic. We should be worrying more about not being able to afford to go to work cuz we can't afford gas than what we'd do if we couldn't get any. I guess for those folks that rely on everyone but themselves survival may be tough..but you'd manage.

these countries dont set the prices the market does

do you cant threaten to withhold goods from them over pricing because they are not responsible for oil prices

but what that would do is piss them off where they would tell us that they arent selling their oil to us.......which would cause the market to take prices even higher knowing that (insert country) has taken their product off the market for us

not only is it illogical but it would be counter productive to do that

im not talking about one small corner of the country

this country as a whole cannot survive without oil

major cities like new york, la, chicago and miami would be crippled without oil

you have almost 2 million people that commute into NYC everyday for work.........some from as far as 2 hours away

no oil = no cars, no buses, no trains = nobody at work = the financial center of the country gets shut down

LA is our link to east asia........we do awhole lot of business with japan, china, hong kong, etc.......if you cant get people to work in LA.......that gets shut down also

the midwest is responsible for growing much of wheat we use in basic things like bread

no oil = no farm equipment = no way to ship it to the rest of the country

you talk about knowing how to hunt and fish.........many parts of the country that isnt an option

madison ave, ventura blvd, etc dont make for good hunting grounds.......oh and by the way.......having the entire country have to find their own food like that and find ways to heat their homes.......that puts us back 300 years

thats what the [censored] pilgrims did

you want to throw away 300 years of development over oil prices?

We have more than enough coal to make every drop of every kind of fuel we need for 200 years, but you have the oil industry in the policy making. It becomes profitable at somewhere around 50 bucks a barrel, goes back to lining pockets. And for the ones that couldn't get by- tough, sorta like that line everybody throws out on that story about the kid and the PS3. Get a job. Walk to work. Eat the degree.

You are lost- Hitler fought the last half of WWII on fuel made from coal as he lost his oilfields. The technology is already here to clean the emissions, the Moutains in Appalachia are full of low sulphur coal. The target is long past, simple sheep and politics, sheep that buy the "supply and demand" story and drive two hours into a city to work are the last remaining hurdle. Tax dollars for a industry posting record profits and no one sees a problem. Not a dollar for energy independence.

It may end up becoming one though.

I was going to pose this thought the other day and got sidetracked--due to the increase in oil prices, we could possibly see the decline of major cities and people driving so much time each way to work. You could see more people choosing to live in smaller cities w/less travel (read: less personal vehicles, more public transportation), and doing more work from home via internet & phone.

You'll likely see more teleconferencing and less international or even long-distance travel if it gets way too costly to do so.

We won't see it all at once mind you, but if things keep up like this, increasing prices at this rate--things could slowly trend to more localized business and travel as a whole.

Watch the morning news from NY and see how many cars have one person in them. All going to the same place, all sitting in a jam, all idling away hundreds of gallons of gas.
